AI can build anything that works now. It still can’t tell what feels right to you.

Emil Kowalski put it plainly: “Simply shipping a product that works is no longer enough, everyone can do that, especially now with AI.” What’s left is taste, which he calls “a trained instinct. The ability to see beyond the obvious and recognize what elevates.”

You train it the same way every time. Surround yourself with great work. Think about why you like something. Practice. The first two usually end up scattered: a folder of screenshots, a few bookmarks, a note that says “this spacing”. Claude can’t see any of it, so it falls back to its defaults.

I wanted my agent to see what I see, so I made Build Taste.

Build Taste is a skill that gives Claude your references: screenshots, links and notes, saved inside your project.

Ask Claude to use it and a canvas opens in your browser. Paste screenshots, drop images, add links, write notes, and say why each one works. Group the ones that belong together. It all saves to .claude/skills/taste/ as you go.

When you click Finish and build taste, Claude reads the board, looks at every picture, and turns your reasons into rules it follows whenever it builds. Correct it later and it sharpens the rules. That’s the practice part.

It’s how I work on components at my lab. No account and nothing uploaded. Your references stay in your project.

If that sounds useful, add it to your project:

Then ask Claude: “Use Build Taste in this project.” Codex and Cursor work too.

Works in Claude Code, Codex and Cursor. Needs Node.js 20 or newer.

The canvas runs on 127.0.0.1 only while you use it, and closes when you finish.
